Are Chemical Peels Safe?

Are Chemical Peels Safe?

December is here. And the holidays will be here in the blink of an eye. Even in Torrance, California, we experience colder, drier temperatures and that means – your skin does, too.

Cooler temps can make wrinkles and large pores more noticeable. The cooler air leaves you with a dry complexion, which can make you look and feel dull. Are you ready to revamp your complexion for a glowing look this season?

Meet the chemical peel – an easy, affordable, and noticeable way to improve the appearance of your skin. The experienced skin experts at Shantique Med Spa service four comprehensive chemical peels for a radiant look this holiday season.

Read on to discover everything you need to know about a chemical peel, including its results, downtime, and whether it's safe.

Chemical peels – a “spa day” for your skin

A chemical peel is like a “spa day” for your complexion but with a bit of science involved. During a chemical peel, your skin technician applies a medical-grade acid solution to your face, neck, or hands to give your skin a total revamp.

The solution gently removes the outer layers of your skin, whisking away age-related imperfections, to reveal a smoother and brighter complexion underneath. The true magic happens when the solution kickstarts a controlled peeling process to encourage cell turnover, stimulating the production of new, healthier skin cells.

The benefits of chemical peels include:

Chemical peels are a minimally invasive treatment safe for all skin types and skin tones.

Meet the four types of peels

Chemical peels aren’t a universal solution; they vary based on your skin’s needs. That’s why we offer four different comprehensive skin peel solutions to best suit your skin.

Superficial skin peel (recovery: 1-3 days)

A superficial skin peel is a great option for patients with fair, sensitive skin or those who haven’t had a peel before. This kind of peel is applied just to the other layer of your skin (epidermis) and is great for addressing issues such as uneven texture, mild discoloration, and fine lines.

Superficial peels require less downtime than deeper peels and offer the most subtle results. You might experience some redness or mild discomfort afterward, but you may resume normal activities the day after your peel.

Medium skin peel (recovery: 7 days)

A medium-strength chemical peel involves the application of a chemical solution – usually containing Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) – to the skin, penetrating beyond the outer layer (epidermis) and into the middle layers (dermis). The purpose of a medium peel is to address more moderate skin concerns, including fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation irregularities, and certain types of acne scars.

You may experience redness, swelling, and peeling for several days to a week. Though it’s safe to resume most activities, it’s important to avoid intense exercise and heat for two to three days after treatment.

VI Peels (recovery: 7 days)

A VI Peel is a type of medium-strength chemical peel containing TCA, salicylic acid, retinoic acid, phenol, and vitamin C. As the name suggests, the "VI" stands for "Vitality Institute," which is the brand that formulated this peel.

VI Peels are known for their versatility to address a range of skin concerns, including signs of aging, hyperpigmentation, acne, and overall skin texture.

Deep peel (recovery: 2-3 weeks)

You may consider a deep peel if you have deep wrinkles and extensive sun damage. Our deep peels are an advanced skincare solution that contains a powerful blend of chemicals to gently remove damaged skin cells and stimulate collagen production. A form of anesthesia is generally used to help manage your pain and keep you comfortable during treatment.

Deep peels require an extensive peeling process, and as a result, they offer the most dramatic results. Patients may experience some discomfort in the aftercare process with redness, swelling, and crusting skin.

Are they safe?

Yes, chemical peels are safe when they are performed by trained professionals. Your results and skin health are reliant on the skincare technician you choose, which is why it's incredibly important to go to someone you trust.
